Kokila
Nadaya, a project which offers underprivileged children the opportunity to
experience traditional Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebrations, was held for
the second consecutive year on the 23rd of April at Moors Sports
Club Grounds.
Organised
by the Rotaract Club of Excellence College of Management, the project succeeded
in bringing a smile to the faces of nearly 100 children from six different
orphanages. This was a massive leap for the project from its simple beginnings
last year, when it was held at an orphanage, instead of a sports ground.
Rotary
Governor Rtn. George Jesuthasan graced the event as the Chief Guest, while members
of the Rotaract Clubs of Battaramulla, Colombo West, IIT, KDU, Colombo Midtown,
Millennium City, NSBM, Regency and Achievers Lanka Business School attended in
order to lend some much appreciated support to the organizers.
The
event began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, which was placed on
a table filled with Avurudu sweets. Thereafter the children and their guardians
were served with seasonal food items. Following this hospitable welcome,
different types of Avurudu games were carried out for the children. After a truly
satisfying lunch, there were more interesting New Year activities arranged for
the participants, including the “Avurudu Kumara and Kumariya” pageants, which
showcased the special talents of the children.
At the end of an eventful day, the organizers and volunteers could
proudly say that they lived up to the tagline of the project, “This Avurudu, I
helped make a difference”.
