A
“flower dansala” was organised by Rotaract District 3220 – Sri Lanka and
Maldives at the Pilléwa Sacred Temple on Bak Full Moon Poya
Day, as Project Serve for the month of April.
Flowers
of different types including lotuses were handed out to devotees as they
stepped in to engage in spiritual activities on this blessed day, at a stall
that was set up at the entrance to the temple. The Chief Prelate offered his
blessings to the initiative, and made announcements that directed people
towards the stall in numbers.
The
project was organized jointly by the Rotaract Clubs of Faculty of Science,
Faculty of Law of University of Colombo, and Informatics Institute of
Technology. The three clubs brought in a large heap of flowers and Rotaractors
of other invited clubs supported the project by cleaning and arranging the
flowers before offering them to devotees. Altogether around 20 Rotaractors took
part in the project.
Project
Serve is the flagship monthly community service project of Rotaract District
3220. It was initiated with the purpose of providing a platform for Rotaract
Clubs to join hands and organise projects on a Poya Day to serve a minimum of
thirty individuals. It has been thriving since its inception in July 2015, and
has already completed 10 successful projects. These projects have, among other
things, successfully funded cataract surgeries, renovated marginalised schools
and provided less fortunate children a taste of Christmas celebrations.
Rotaract, a
partner of Rotary International, is the world’s largest youth-led movement with
over 9,539 clubs and a membership of more than 220,000 volunteer youth.
Rotaract District 3220 includes over 70 Rotaract Clubs in Sri Lanka and
Maldives with a total membership of more than 2,500 youth leaders. It operates
along four main avenues, namely Community Service, Club Service, Professional
Development and International Understanding.
